So I just typed this really long and detailed answer to a question I got on Question Swap. The question was "What's your favorite thing to cook, and can you share the recipe?"
After I typed the damn thing question swap froze up and I couldn't submit it.. so to see that it doesn't go to complete waste, I'm posting it on here. Enjoy.
My bachelor lifestyle ensures that most of the culinary work I do is limited to taking whatever's left in the fridge, throwing it into a pot and cooking it. But here is something I made up several years ago:
I called them "Carmel Apple Crisps"
Filo dough. This is *Really* thin dough, you can buy it frozen from the supermaket.
5 granny smith apples
Some Rose or white wine
Sugar
Butter
First off, let the filo dough thaw in your fridge overnight, or you will ruin it.
Take the apples and cut them into thin slices, then take those and throw them in a bowl. Fill it with wine until they're all covered, and add about a half-cup of sugar. Throw that sucker in the fridge while you're working on the dough.
Now, take your thawed dough and unfold it carefully. You'll notice how freakin thin it is. Seriously, it's less than paper thin, so you'll end up tearing several sheets, but don't worry, you've got plenty.
Now then, take a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and brush some melted butter on it. Dust some sugar on the melted butter.
Now, using both hands, carefully take one sheet of filo dough and lay it on the paper. Now, paint this sheet with melted butter and sugar. Repeat this, layer after layer, for about 15 or so layers total.
Now cut triangles or other designs into the dough and bake it at 350 degrees (F) for 15-20 min's, or until it's golden brown on top.
While this is baking, you can take the apples that have been soaking and throw them into a pot. Throw that on high heat and boil off a lot of the wine until it reduces to a wine-sugar glaze.
After the dough is done, take it out, cut it up and lay the apple slices on top. Drizzle with carmel.
I didn't bother to tell you how to make carmel, because there's a million sources online. Or if you're feeling lazy you can just buy some in a bottle. Either way, this is something simple I made up several years ago and I thought you might like it.
Enjoy! :D
